Information about Baton Rouge Community College Pell grants, registering for elective courses, and taking tests for free online. Which college degrees give you the best chances of finding employment after graduation? Some students select a major because it may be valuable in the workplace. Other students choose their major simply because they enjoy the subject material. As the Baton Rouge Community College admissions office has to analyze many applications, your goal is to stand out in a good way. If you need financial aid in order to complete college, you should visit the student loan office to research out-of-state vs in-state tuition costs well before your expected starting date. Moreover, there are tuition-assistance programs available, including Pell grants, minority scholarships, and other federal student aid programs. Plus loans typically carry low interest rates, and should be utilized in your financial aid package before turning to private student loans.

Admissions officers seek to learn how a given applicant thinks, and what kind of person they are. The most popular college major is business administration, split evenly between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, the fields of education, English and liberal arts dominate the list. If you choose, online education gives you the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript. Alternatively, you may be able to complete online credits for a grade. Every class is recorded and stored on a remote server, allowing students to replay difficult sections as many times as needed.

Online Courses - MOOCs

Baton Rouge Community College Pell grants
College degree majors that offer high starting-salaries after graduation include the sciences, business administration, and engineering. If you remain true to your career interests, not just going after salary, your overall job earnings will increase as you gain experience. However, if your focus is more on salary alone, there's a higher risk that you'll suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers later on.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year university, and you can earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. By taking some of your required degree courses online, you may be able to graduate a semester early, thus saving money on tuition. If you're currently employed, you can take online courses in your free time to advance your career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing interactive platforms such as Blackboard, and mobile apps. Udemy is a startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Similarly, Khan Academy now offers free lecture videos served through YouTube. Then there's Coursera, a competing software platform, with millions of enrolled students from around the world. Finally, MIT announced that their open courseware platform (OCW) will be available at no cost.

Online Tests - Free Practice!

This section offers practice tests in several engineering subject areas. Each of the following multiple-choice tests has 10 questions to work on. No sign-up required, just straight to the test.

Admissions Process

Most colleges accept either the SAT or ACT, and have formulas for converting raw test scores. Colleges use these standardized tests because there are substantial differences in curricula, grading, and difficulty among US high schools. The SAT test is more focused on testing reasoning ability while the ACT is a content-based test of achievement. On average, over half of students retaking the SAT saw improvements in their scores. Further, Advanced Placement exams are offered in a variety of physical sciences, offering you college credit for honors-level classes that you have taken while still in high school. Test yourself with practice exams online, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests.

In some instances, colleges may spot-check admissions applications for accuracy, such as requiring proof of a summer internship. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice. An ideal academic record is one of increasingly better grades, in courses of progressive difficulty. About half of colleges use a waiting list, and many community colleges have agreements with four-year universities, so that the transfer of credits is ensured.

Financial Aid Information

Government scholarships and Pell grants, combined with sports scholarships, only account for a third of total college aid. Student loans, work-study earnings, and personal savings accounts make up the remaining two-thirds. It costs nothing to use the financial aid calculator online, and see if you qualify for need-based financial aid. In fact, millions of students that would have qualified for some financial aid were late in submitting required application forms, so they missed out. The official FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov and is free to use. The earliest that the FAFSA form can be filled out is January of a student's senior year.

According to the US Department of Education, nearly 45 million Americans incurred student debt during their college career. Loan programs generally issue loans based on the credit history of the applicant and any co-signer. This is in contrast to federal loan programs that focus on need-based criteria. Federal Direct Student Loans are funded by the US Treasury. Alternatively, student credit cards may seem like a good short-term solution, but the interest rates are high, and credit cards often carry an annual fee. Peterson's scholarship search is good to check not only for college scholarships, but also for the extensive resources on the college application process. Volunteer organizations offer scholarships or grants to students whose background or chosen field overlaps the field of the organization.

College Inspector is the work of a group of Thai students in Bangkok, using info from the US Department of Education, Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Students who receive Federal Pell Grants and have extreme financial need may receive FSEOG grants. The FSEOG grant does not need to be repaid, and the FSEOG program is administered directly by each college or university in-house. Check with your school's financial aid office to find out if they offer the FSEOG grant program. You can receive anywhere between $100 and $4,000 a year, depending on when you apply, the amount of other financial aid you get, and the availability of grant funding. Each participating school receives a certain amount of FSEOG funds each year from the Office of Federal Student Aid. Once the full amount of the school?s FSEOG funds has been awarded to students, no more FSEOG awards can be made for that academic year. This system works differently from the Federal Pell Grant Program, which provides funding to eligible students.
